Delivery and Installation

Shipping

In June 1986, the panels were packed into nine wooden crates and taken to the port of embarkment, Le Havre. The shipment left France on June 16, 1986 and arrived in Oakland, CA on July 16, 1986. The shipment was then transported by truck to Los Altos. The total weight of the shipment was 19,191 pounds.

Removal and Installation

The existing window frames were not sufficientl;y strong to supporty the heavy glass panels and had to be removed. Prevailing seasonal winds and seismic stability also had to be considered. The new, more substantial frames were designed by Christopher Arnold, A. I. A, working with Lorie through the Church's Fine Arts Committee. The new frames were made of clear, dry, heart redwood. The grandson of the artist and son of Jacques Lorie, Herv`e, came from France to supervise the installation of the windows. A local contractor, Skywood Builders (Bruce Chadbourne, owner), installed the frames. Hogan Art Glass of San Jose installed the glass.
