The south window represents summer, the ministry of Jesus, and early middle age. The colors are the colors of summer and the trees are in full bloom.Waves and water occupy the right hand side of the window (partially obscured by the pipe organ). In the center are birds and fish. Between them we see the spirit of God, represented as a dove, descending. Facing the dove is a dragon chained to a tree, representing chaos. In Revelations, when the dragon is freed, chaos will reign on the earth as a prelude to the apocalypse. Below, and to the left of the dragon are seven sparkling flowers as an emblem of the Holy Ghost. The seven flowers the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Strength, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2). These gifts were bestowed upon Mary at the time of the Incarnation. At the top, center is the Sun of Justice. Small crosses mark the symbols of the four Evangelists: an eagle (John), a lion (Mark), a man (Matthew), and an ox (Luke). The opaque matrix of the window is used to depict two large trees (sequoias) which represent the vigor and strength of adolescence and middle age. Their trunks begin at the bottom of the window and the branches spread throughout. At the bottom, right of center, is the burning bush encountered by Moses (Exodus 3:1-10). On the right side is the tax collector Zacchaeus, up in a sycamore tree, waiting for the Messiah (Luke 19:2-8). There are seven areas where you can click in this image: |
