A small group of Episcopalians met for their first service on Palm Sunday, 1913. Later that year 22 persons met for the "purpose of establishing a Mission of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the Diocese of California". Less than a year later, the cornerstone was laid for the church building on Orange Avenue near downtown Los Altos.

For the next 30 years, vicars from the surrounding communities served the church. Lay participation (for priests were not available every Sunday) was extensive. In 1942 the first full-time vicar was appointed and by 1952 parish status was achieved. An ambitious building program also was undertaken to increase the capacity of the facility to serve a rapidly growing community.

The expansion efforts on the original site were limited and the present church here on Border Road was acquired. In 1960 the Parish Hall, offices, 17 classrooms and the chapel were constructed. The sanctuary was built in 1967. Since then many additions have been made: Stained glass windows, a pipe organ, the Shires Memorial Library, sculptured fabric tapestries in the church, and refurbishment of many areas which were beginning to show signs of wear. The beautiful kneelers in the chancel were created by talented women as a memorial to one of our members. They depict local wildflowers and versions of the cross. The columbarium, a modern version of the "old church graveyard", was also established.

During this time, the large debt which had been undertaken to finance construction of the church was paid off, leaving Christ Church debt free. The pipe organ, library, stained glass windows, tapestries and columbarium were all realized through special gifts and memorials.

A self-guided tour of our glorious windows is available in the narthex. They were created by Gabriel Loire of Chartres, France, and merit special attention.

In 1993 we welcomed the Mandarin-speaking congregation who meet in our chapel and join us for bilingual services occasionally during the year.

In 1999 we helped the Diocese of California celebrate it's 150th anniversary.

In 2000, Morgan Silbaugh retired and a search was begun for a new rector. In July of 2001, The Rev. Malcolm C. Young accepted the call to be Rector of Christ Church, Los Altos.
